Why are electricity prices rising?

The cost of electricity in the wholesale market has hit record highs in recent times. These market price rises have been reflected in the bills businesses like yours are facing.

But what has caused this price hike? There are a couple of factors – depleted gas reserves (which contribute to electricity generation) stemming from a couple of bad winters and the pandemic, and the conflict in Ukraine has played a big part.

These high business electricity prices are expected to continue throughout the remainder of 2022 and into 2023.

However, that doesn’t mean that your business can’t save money on its electricity. The market is still competitive, with suppliers always looking to gain new customers. So, why not start your business electricity comparison today?

How much does business electricity cost?

It’s not a question that can be answered definitively – and that’s because every business is different. The cost of your bill is dependent on how much electricity your business uses. We’ve put together a useful table detailing how much the average business could expect to pay based on current market prices.

Understanding your business electricity bills

Whether you run a small IT consultancy, a local church or a manufacturing plant, you’ll always see the same pieces of information on your bills. This includes:

Standing Charge

It’s the rate you pay that covers the costs involved in delivering your organisation’s gas supply. It’s a daily rate, but it’s also worth noting that some suppliers offer business gas tariffs without a standing charge.

Unit Rate

This is the amount you pay for each unit of gas you use (kWh). Of course, what you pay will depend on how much your business uses.

Contract End Date

When you reach this period, your current fixed price unit rate will end.

Climate Change Levy (CCL)

Your business pays the Climate Change Levy (CCL) on the non-renewable gas it uses and is calculated on every unit. However, it doesn’t apply to all businesses. Those that use renewable energy are exempt, as are businesses that use less than the average set amount – 145 kWh per day or 52,925 kWh per year. Organisations with a domestic or residential element are also exempt – such as care homes.

VAT

Currently 20% as standard. Businesses using less than 145 kWh of gas a day, or organisations with that domestic element only pay 5%.

Saving money on commercial electricity rates

You’ll be surprised at just how much you can do to reduce the amount you spend on electricity. From switching out your inefficient bulbs for modern LEDs or CFLs to reducing the amount of time you have the heating or air conditioning switched on – it can all make a difference to your bill.

These savings could potentially help you reduce the cost of your overheads and ultimately improve your bottom line. Market fluctuations mean there’s always a chance there’s a cheaper, better deal out there. And if you don’t take advantage of it, you can guarantee your competitors will.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is commercial electricity cheaper than domestic?

When it comes to the unit rate, typically, it’s cheaper. This is because suppliers buy business electricity in bulk and only the amount needed to cover the duration of the contract.

However, businesses do face additional charges that domestic energy customers don’t. These include VAT. Yes, domestic energy customers pay VAT on their energy – just not as much as business customers. The rate is currently set at 20%. Businesses that use an average of 33 kWh per day (or 1,000 kWh per month) pay just 5%.

Climate Change Levy (CCL) is an environmental tax that’s paid on both the non-renewable gas and electricity used by businesses. If your business uses 100% green electricity, you won’t have to pay the CCL.

It’s also the same for businesses considered ‘low usage’. So, if your business uses 33 kWh of electricity or less per day during the billing period, you’ll be exempt from paying the CCL.

Will my electricity be cut off when switching?

No, absolutely not. Your premises will continue to be supplied with electricity as normal. So, there’s no disruption to your business’ day-to-day activity. All that will change is the supplier billing you.
